Many UPMC hospital workers went on strike Thursday morning, seeking union rights, after the healthcare company announced wage increases in March.

The group — including home care and nursing home workers and other community members — gathered downtown for a news conference at the City-County Building.

At 3:30 p.m., they planned to march from Bigelow Boulevard to UPMC Montefiore as part of a larger global protest for $15-an-hour wages and union rights.
